Sacred Symbols Rediscovered

Ancient culture, philosophy & myth have at times contributed to Christian art.

"And we know that to them that love God, all things work together unto good, to such as, according to his purpose, are called to be saints." St. Paul, Romans 8:28

Written Word

Stories where the divine quietly returns.

In the early Church, Mary Magdalene was known by the title Apostola Apostolorum—the Apostle to the Apostles. She was the one commissioned by the Divine to preach the Gospel to the men who would later be called the "pillars" of the Church. But she was not the only one. Magdalene was walking a path blazed by Jesus' mother, Mary, the quintessential Apostle.

From March to November 2024, I wrote a series of booklets (essentially several chapters of a future book) titled The Return of the Goddess. This was not a repudiation of traditional core Christian beliefs but rather a study of how the themes of several thousand years worth of religious thought were recapitulated in Christianity.

To my understanding, it makes sense that the persons of Jesus and Mary would have antecedents-not only in ancient Jewish scripture and prophecy but among the so-called pagan religions as well.

I had released this series of chapters via Amazon Kindle self-publishing. In mid-2025, I temporarily removed the books from availability as I am seeking to further edit these writings prior to re-releasing them. This project has been delayed but not forgotten. 😉

When I painted my icon of Mary, the Mother of God, I chose to depict her not as a passive, silent figure, but as the one to whom the Apostles looked to for reassurance in the days leading up to Pentecost.

Mary, is the Mother of God, the second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ. She is not a goddess. She is not an Apostle. She is a disciple. She is neither a priestess nor an ordained minister. Rather, she is the preeminent member of the "priesthood of the faithful" described by St. Peter.

In sacred art, and architecture at times, there is a recapitulation of many ancient goddess traditions. But we err terribly if we call Mary a goddess, because such a title would violate the honor due to God the Most Holy Trinity alone pursuant to the First Commandment.

When Mary is depicted in a priestly posture in some ancient ecclesial art, she is not to be confused with the ordained priests, beginning with the Twelve. Above even the angels in sanctity, Mary is the "exalted human" who precedes even the Apostles in her understanding of Christ’s mission.

Mary is the mother of God but she never claimed divinity for herself.

My Journey

For years, I have woven ancient symbols into paintings and essays, tracing sacred themes through time.

Each piece invites you into a timeless dialogue.
